FIM SPEEDWAY: TOUGH BREAK FOR BEWLEY
Great Britain ace Dan Bewley has confirmed he suffered “a broken femur and a compressed vertebrae in my back” in a high-speed spill in Denmark on Wednesday evening.
The incident occurred in heat one of Bewley’s Danish club Region Varde’s home clash with Speedwayligaen champions Slangerup in Outrup.
Bewley, who was celebrating his 27th birthday on Wednesday, appeared to suffer a mechanical defect shortly after the start, straightening up and ploughing into the first-turn fence. The meeting was abandoned due to damage to the safety fence, with Bewley taken to hospital for checks.
Subject to confirmation from the FIM, the Cumbrian looks set to miss the FIM Speedway GP of Czech Republic – Prague on Saturday after he confirmed the extent of his injuries on his Facebook page.
He posted: “Happy birthday to me! It could have been worse, so I am grateful for that. But I am absolutely devastated. I truly felt like I was entering my prime, probably enjoying speedway more than I have since I was 16.
“Thank you to my team, my clubs, my sponsors and everyone who has supported me through thick and thin. Thank you for all the messages; it means a lot, but I am really struggling to read them at the moment.
“I’ll keep you all updated when I have some news, but for now, I am being treated well in Denmark.
“I have a broken femur and a compressed vertebrae in my back. I knew straight away that I broke my leg, but thankfully it’s a cleaner break than last time. Peace and love.”
Bewley broke his left femur in five places at Workington in 2018, bouncing back from that injury to become one of the top riders in the world.
Everyone involved in FIM Speedway wishes Dan a speedy recovery.
