FIM SPEEDWAY: BECKER BAGS 15-POINT TO BOOK FIM SGP CHALLENGE SPOT
American racer Luke Becker took a big step towards flying the Stars and Stripes in Speedway GP after reaching the FIM SGP Challenge with a 15-point maximum at the qualifier in Abensberg on Monday afternoon, May 25.
Becker produced a perfect five rides in Germany to secure his spot at former FIM Italian Speedway GP venue Terenzano on July 25.
He is joined in qualifying by 2022 FIM SGP Challenge winner Kim Nilsson, who made it through on 13, alongside Aussie star Rohan Tungate.
There was tension in the battle for the final two places, which were decided via a run-off after three riders tied on 11 points.
Aussie star Keynan Rew earned his spot in the SGP qualifiers by winning the FIM Oceania Championship, and he won the run-off ahead of last season’s Challenge winner Dominik Kubera as both progressed to Terenzano. Latvian international Francis Gusts was the man who missed the cut.
FIM German Speedway GP wild card Norick Blodorn missed out on nine points, with French international Dimitri Berge falling short on eight.
There was also disappointment for Czech champion Jan Kvech, who crashed out of the meeting in heat 14 and was taken to hospital for checks.
