HEAPS OF TITLE ACTION AT TOOWOOMBA SPEEDWAY
It was action a plenty during the Super Sedans Jack Childs Twin Feature Challenge presented by Kin and Co Property at Hi-Tec Oils Toowoomba, Saturday night, March 16.
In feature race one it was fastest to the front. From the start Hayden Brims had fuel pressure problems which saw him not start after winning both his heats. Darren Kane the only other driver to win both his heats. From the restart Kane and JJ Hamilton moved up to the front row.
From the green light they were side by side through turn one Kane getting the better run through turns three and four with Sean Black driving around the outside of David Nichols and settling into third. Kane now enters lapped traffic just four laps in, Sean Black also having a good drive through traffic as Nichols goes with him. Zack Brims moving up one spot as Nichols dropped back to 5th Brims now chasing Black with 8 laps to go slipping past in heavy traffic to move into second.
With two laps to go Kane pulls to the infield just prior to that he was three tenths of a second off the track record stopping the clock at 13.139. Hamilton taking over the lead and under pressure from Zack Brims. Brims threw everything at him in turn four as the chequered flag was waving Brims having one last look and almost got through on the inside. Hamilton hung on to win the first feature of the night, Zack Brims second and Sean Black third.
When the second feature rolled out onto the track fans knew they were in for more of the same. Hollywood could not have scripted it any better with plenty of race action and not really knowing the end result until the chequered flag. Darren Kane back after a crank angle sensor issue costing him the win in the first feature.
From the green light Hayden Brims took control of the first few laps from Darren Kane and Bob McCosker. Meanwhile from the back of the field Sean Black was progressing forward nicely and with 15 to go he was up to 5th and slipped underneath McCosker briefly.
McCosker fires back to reclaim third position as he runs high, Black taking the opportunity and drives by on the inside Zack Brims driving through also. JJ Hamilton now enters the equation and starts to make his presence felt as the laps wind down. Hayden Brims the eventual winner of the Kin and Co Property Super Sedan Twin Feature Challenge in memory of Jack Childs. Darren Kane finished second and Sean Black third the only driver to make the podium twice on Saturday night.
In the Legend Cars Queensland Title defending Queensland Champion Matt Gordon started on the inside front row with current Australian Champion Robert Rawlings behind him. The ACT Champion Darren Snowden started outside the front row and Rieley Fisher from fourth. So with the front two rows stacked with the best drivers in the country the scene was set for the twenty lap Queensland Title.
From the start Fisher goes high and the defending champion gets swamped and can’t move forward as they go three wide as race leader Darren Snowden retires to the infield with rear end failure. Fisher now leads as he gets the hurry up from Rawlings, the Australian Champion levels up with him in turn two as they race wheel to wheel down the back straight as they now enter lapped traffic the two run high and low weaving their way through as Gordon drops back slightly with 5 laps left to run.
Now clear of traffic he starts to move forward quickly with Rawlings closing the gap as they go down the back straight for the last time. Rieley Fisher crowned the Queensland Champion for 2024 from a hard charging Robert Rawlings and Matt Gordon.
The V8 Dirt Modified Queensland Championship didn’t disappoint with David Clark dominating the race setting a new track record in the process (12.808). They came from NSW and Victoria all wanting to put their name on the honour roll. Victorian Steve Milthorpe and David Clark started on the front row, defending champion Kevin Britten from position five. Clark gets the better of the start and leads the first lap. The first stoppage came when Mark Robinson got turned around, Todd Hobson and Andrew Firth also involved leaving Dale Corbett upside down amongst the melee from the restart David Clark got away nicely as Kevin Britten went straight to the top having a big look around the outside.
At the front it was Clark,Young and Milthorpe while in the middle of the race a battle was on as drivers were trying to make their way forward, Puzzutti running high looking impressive through traffic. At the front Young was closing the gap as Clark lifted to another level as Young continued to add pressure with nine to go and lapped cars spread across the whole track.
Young looked the better and had a chance or two of taking the lead as both drivers went to the top to clear traffic. Once clear, Young having a big look down the inside of Clark as he cleared the last of the lapped cars then dropping back to the bottom slowing Youngs progress to win the Queensland Title from Seiton Young and Steve Milthorpe.
