TANCREDI’S TRIPLE CROWN AND DIGGERS CUP SUCCESS
Geelong’s Michael Tancredi turned on a spectacle at Geelong’s Avalon Raceway for the final race meeting of the season.. Taking out the Diggers Cup and in doing so won the A Plus Powdercoating Tripe Crown as well.
Jordan Abbott kick-started his race day with a quickest time effort for the C&H Trucking Sprintcar Limited series in flight number one with a 12.614 second lap time.
Andy Hibbert went slightly better again in flight number two with a 12.608 second flyer.
Mr Speed Matthew Reed took an overall best with his blistering 12.570 lap time in the third and final flight of time trials.
Mildura’s Corey Sandow found supreme speed in the opening heat race getting up over Jordan Abbott who followed through for second.
Brett Milburn drove away on the front row to win heat two by over a second distance to Andy Hibbert.
Michael Tancredi put the pieces together to a fast racecar In heat three to dominate by over 2 seconds back to Matthew Reed.
Ben Micallef was the fastest man on track in heat race four, getting the win over fast Eddie Lumbar in second place.
Dan Scott won by a staggering four second gap over Brett Smith and Matthew Reed In heat race number four.
Michael Tancredi continued the fast paced effort with a convincing win over Mitchell Sutej who was home in second for the final heat race.
Sprintcar rookie Jordan Rae turned heads after he won the B Main driving the Domain Ramsay VA2 machine. David McKay, Travis Millar and Sam Wren qualified into the 25 Lap Main Event for the C&H Trucking Series and Diggers Cup.
Consistently lapping at three-tenths faster than the nearest opposition, Michael Tancredi never really looked like losing the main event. Tancredi was the first car over the line on lap 25 with a strong 1.5 second victory over Matthew Reed and Brett Smith.
Andy Hibbert and Sam Wren, after an epic charge from the B Main made up the tight knit top five. In one of his better main event finishes, Jordan Abbott was sixth with Paul Solomon, Dan Scott, Mitchell Sutej and Jordan Rae staggeringly standing inside the top ten.
Speedcars also competed for their own Diggers Cup seeing Dillon Ghent claim the first honours of the day in heat race one with Louis Rodriguez and Travis Mills in second and third.
Mitch Whiting controlled heat two with a narrow victory from a lurking Nick Parker and Daniel Timberlake.
Luke Storer was the best at the flags in heat race three, with Nick Parker claiming another top two effort.
Matt Jackson was solid in the final heat race, winning in the 97N over Mitch Whiting and DJ Raw.
Nick Parker would be the man standing tall at the end of the 17 laps recorded with his V39 the fastest car on the raceway. Travis Mills was the second car home with Dillon Ghent sharing a spot on the podium.
Mitch Whiting and Matt Jackson both worked themselves inside top five positions. Luke Storer, Fred Freeman, Louis Rodriguez, Caleb Mills and DJ Raw would be the final man to make it inside the top ten finishers.
With the highly regarded Diggers Cup paying tribute to our nation’s ANZAC heroes, the final race meeting of the regular Avalon Raceway season, it was a bitter-sweet end knowing that a scheduled off season break would separate the next race meeting to take place in late 2022. Michael Tancredi and Nick Parker were the two men who took home the renowned Diggers Cup across Sprintcars and Speedcars respectively.
