Sean Black has won the final main event of the 2025-26 Hi-Tec Oils Toowoomba Speedway season in dominant fashion on Saturday, May 23.
Black started from the front row and led all 30 laps. From the green flag, we knew we were in for an exciting race, and the Super Sedans didn’t disappoint during the penultimate round of the 2025/26 series.
Racing three wide into turn one as Steve Jordan tried to drive through on the inside. Todd Atkins was also there as Zac Brims entered the top five battle. Back at the front, Black and Atkins were having a race of their own as he levels up momentarily. Atkins was on the pace early in the evening, setting a new one-lap record of 12.818 seconds. Harry Doyle, seeing an opportunity, moved up into second. He ran the bottom line with Black comfortably mid-track with Atkins now back to third with 19 laps still to run.
Brad Pascoe moved into fourth, driving past Steve Jordan. But nobody was going to deny Sean Black the win in round 18 of the McCosker Contracting Championship Series. Harry Doyle finished second and Brad Pascoe was third – the biggest mover in the classy field, coming from position 13. The final round of the series moves to Bundaberg this coming weekend.
In the Engage AG Champion Series powered by Steering and Suspension Warehouse, defending series champion Brodie Hollyman had a handy four-point lead going into the Grand Final. He started from position six and, within a lap, was in third and under pressure from Jye O’Brien. He would eventually finish fourth. At the drop of the chequered flag, Matthew Layton won the Grand Final and the series by just one point after lapping every car up to 7th position. Current Australian Champion Jordan Biviano would finish second, and Jye O’Brien 3rd.
In the Queensland Lightning Sprint Championship, Dave Fanning started alongside Keith Blatch on the front row. After the heats, Blatch was the highest point scorer. Fanning got the better of the start and started to open up a handy lead over Blatch and Darren Baldwin, and with 25 laps to run, there was a lot of racing to do before a new Queensland Champion could be crowned. Deep midfield, the battle was on for fourth and fifth as Wayne Iacono and Nick Whell were out on their own in the race for minor placings.
The same happened at the front with Blatch levelling up on the low line and slightly in front. By now, Darren Baldwin had closed the gap at the halfway point. Fanning, looking comfortable in front, ahead of Blatch and Iacono, who was soon to exit the race after an oil line parted company with the motor, putting an end to what may have been. Nick Whell, seeing an opportunity, drove around the outside of Baldwin and into third. After a consistent 25 rotations of Toowoomba’s high banks, Dave Fanning became the new Queensland Champion, beating Keith Blatch and Nick Whell in third. And that’s a wrap for the 2025/26 season. It all kicks off again in August with a series of practice nights and racing in September, so come and join us in our 50th season of racing in 2026/27.
Congratulations to Dave Fanning on winning the Queensland Lightning Sprint Queensland Title.
