PIRATES POWER TO VICTORY
POOLE secured their first silverware of 2025 with a comprehensive 51-39 win at Redcar to lift the MAXiCab Knockout Cup – taking the trophy for the fourth time in five years.
The Pirates led the tie by 14 points from the home leg and then dominated the return on Teesside to take their second victory in the space of a week at the north-east venue.
The Pirates led on the night from the first race when home No.1 Charles Wright was disqualified after clashing with Tobias Thomsen, and their aggregate victory was secured with a win for Lewis Kerr in Heat 12, with only one point required from the race.
Richard Lawson completed a perfect Cup Final by racing to a 15-point maximum to follow on from his paid maximum on Wednesday, and skipper Zach Cook dropped just one point from five rides as he finished on 12+2.
Bears reserve Ace Pijper collected two wins early in the meeting and top-scored with 9+1, and he also walked away from a heavy crash in Heat 8.
Lawson said: “Poole seem to step up that one bit when it comes to finals, and I feel like I did the same, especially going through the card in both legs, so I’m chuffed to bits.
“I think we’ve all clicked at the right time, and the target at the start of the year was to defend that Treble.
“Now we’ve put ourselves in a good position, and it’s one down, two to go!”

IPSWICH manager Ritchie Hawkins paid tribute to fellow co-promoter Chris Louis and captain Danny King after his side lifted the ROWE Motor Oil Premiership title on Thursday.
Louis was part of the Witches’ last success as a rider way back in 1998 before stepping up to run the club, whilst King first raced for the Foxhall outfit in 2003.
They had lost out in the Premiership Grand Final in both 2019 and 2023, as well as suffering semi-final exits, but this season it all came right and the title was clinched in front of the biggest Foxhall crowd in years.
Hawkins said: “For me it has been a long time coming, but Danny has been here since he was 16. We spoke before the meeting about how many meetings he has raced for the club in the quest to get to this moment, and for him to finally achieve that is overdue before he ends up retiring.
“Chris has been absolutely amazing to work with. For what he does for the club and British speedway, you can see why we are the best supported club in the country.
“The way the town gets behind us and the local sponsorship we have is amazing. That is down to Chris’ efforts. I will be forever thankful for the opportunity he has given me to be part of it.
“You saw how much the club means to the town when you saw how many people were here, and how happy everyone was. What a week for the town and I am truly blessed to be a part of it.”

WORKINGTON will have the stars of the future on show today (Saturday, 1pm) when they stage the 2025 British Under-19 Final.
Ace Pijper defends the title he won at Oxford last year, with tough competition likely against an array of riders with regular senior experience this season.
Luke Harrison, Will Cairns, Ben Trigger, Freddy Hodder, Max Perry, Jody Scott, Jordy Loftus and Comets racer Vinnie Foord have all been involved in the Cab Direct Championship this year along with Pijper.
Home hopes rest with Foord, who said: “I should have a bit of an advantage being on my home track, but it is a track that a lot of riders turn up to and like, so it’s a hard one.”
The meeting is sponsored by local family-run business Ben Hodgson Cars.
LINE-UP: 1 Luke Harrison, 2 Ryan Ingram, 3 Ace Pijper, 4 Jamie Etherington, 5 Will Cairns, 6 Ben Trigger, 7 Harry Fletcher, 8 Freddy Hodder, 9 Max Perry, 10 Jody Scott, 11 Cooper Rushen, 12 Stene Pijper, 13 Vinnie Foord, 14 Charlie Southwick, 15 Jordy Loftus, 16 Ashton Vale. FOLLOWING today’s (Saturday) British Under-19 Final at Workington, there is the fifth round of the 250cc class in the British Youth Championship as well as the final rounds for the both the 125cc and 125cc Support classes.
Ten riders compete in the very competitive 250cc class with series leader Casper Kluczniak looking to increase his lead at the top of the standings with just one round to go after today.
As well as the British title, there is also a race on for second and third with a number of riders still in contention to compete for a medal including Oli Bovingdon, Archie Rolph, Seth Norman and Emerson Betty.
Sadly Ollie Binns, who is currently fourth in the standings misses out due to a broken collarbone sustained at Plymouth last week when guesting for Leicester in the NDT.
This is the final round for the two 125cc classes and Lewis Hague is set to win his first British title with Fraser Buckle expected to claim silver, but a race is on for the bronze medal between Charlie Fletcher and Oscar Berwick.
In the Support class Callum Hague and Douglas Marshall go into this final round all level, and therefore whoever comes out on top between those two today will be crowned 2025 Support class winner.
For the bronze medal Ella Marshall has a five and six-point lead over Seb Kelly and Jessica Cox respectively.
The Young Lions would like to thank the Workington promotion for their continued support of British Youth Speedway as well as the Young Lions’ series sponsors.
