SCORPIONS QUALIFY FOR GRAND FINAL
SCUNTHORPE are through to the Cab Direct Championship Grand Final after successfully defending their advantage on a tense night at Glasgow.
The Scorpions took a 16-point lead into the semi-final second leg and prevented the Tigers from clawing more than six points back until it was too late.
Josh Pickering won his first three races for the visitors, and he along with reserve Connor Mountain, Michael Palm Toft and guest Jody Scott kept the visitors in the ascendancy throughout.
Pickering overcame Tigers captain Chris Harris in a thrilling Heat 11 and then split the home duo in Heat 13 to take the Scorpions to the brink of progression, with Palm Toft officially wrapping things up in Heat 14.
Scorpions boss David Howe said: “It feels pretty good. It’s been a tense old meeting, and tough on a few of our riders. I feel a bit sorry for Connor because we burnt him out halfway through the meeting!
“The boys did the work at Scunthorpe to be honest, but to keep it so close tonight, I’m really happy.
“We’re not a massive club, and the last Grand Final we made was in 2012. Everybody chips in and works hard, it’s a very family-run club so to make the Final is special. To be there is amazing, and you never know what can happen.”
Glasgow manager Cami Brown said: “Obviously we are all gutted. The damage was done in the first leg earlier in the month.
“We tried our best to try and get Scunthorpe on the rack a bit and put some pressure on them. However the Heat 8 5-1 for them killed the tie.
“I’m still proud of this team. We lost Kyle Howarth with three months still to go and still got this close to reaching a third Grand Final in four seasons. The boys gave it everything tonight. But it always comes down to fine margins in the end.”
Scunthorpe will now face holders Poole over two legs in the Cab Direct Championship Grand Final.

BERWICK look to make home advantage count when they host Plymouth in the first leg of the MAXiCab KO Cup Final at Shielfield Park tonight (Saturday).
The Bandits have a 100 per cent record on their own track this season, having won all 13 matches, and in nine of those fixtures they have passed the 50-point mark.
However, one of the sides who managed to restrict them somewhat were Plymouth, with the league fixture between the two ending 49-41 in July.
Berwick operate rider replacement for Jordan Jenkins whilst the Gladiators have named a full strength side with Scott Nicholls back from injury.
Bandits manager Stewart Dickson said: “It’s down to us to make sure that Fortress Shielfield Park continues this season.
“That’s where we can do the damage in the first leg. Having said that, Plymouth are a very experienced side with big occasion riders.
“So have we. Peter Kildemand is a Grand Prix winner; Nick Morris has ridden in World Cups and in recent weeks we have shown that we have match-winners all through the team – Jye Etheridge and Reid Battye have been outstanding, but everyone has contributed.
“Our last two home matches saw us score 55 and 53. I’d take that on Saturday but first things first, we need to win the meeting before starting to think about by how many. We have to do our jobs when it really matters.”

GREAT Britain’s Robert Lambert and Belle Vue’s Brady Kurtz could both end tonight as World Champion as they go into a dramatic title decider in Torun.
Lambert, defending champion Bartosz Zmarzlik, and Kurtz are covered by just three points ahead of the final Grand Prix of the season.
The form rider is undoubtedly Lambert, who has won two of the last five GPs and finished second in the other three, and he will be racing on his home Polish circuit having gained significant ground last time out in Denmark when Zmarzlik and Kurtz both finished off the podium.
Lambert said: “It would be nice to bring home the gold, but I also have a long career ahead of me. Hopefully I haven’t peaked yet, so whatever Saturday brings, I am looking forward to it and I’ll just go for the ride.
“I’m in a great position, but this is speedway, and anything can happen. I have already ticked off my goal of getting a medal of some kind.
“We will just go with the flow and see what colour that will be in the end. I’m sure there will be some suspense, but I can’t wait to see what Saturday brings.”

BRITISH youngsters Luke Harrison, Will Cairns and Cooper Rushen are in Germany to compete in today’s (Saturday) European Under-19 Pairs Final at Pocking.
All three were involved in the recent individual Final at that level in Slovenia, and now they will be looking for a medal in the team event.
Harrison was the highest placed GB rider at Krsko where he finished sixth, and he admitted he could have had more than nine points on the night.
He said: “I finally found something that seems to be working a bit better for me out on the continent, which is good as a whole, and I put on a performance that I know I’m more than capable of.
“I think in hindsight it really should have been a podium had it not been for a few small mistakes here and there which I’m a little disappointed about, but I can’t really complain with sixth.
“With the team we have in Pocking, I think we should be going for a gold. We’ve got one of the strongest teams in the line-up with us three, so I have no doubt we’ll be there challenging.”
Amongst the eight competing nations in Pocking, Denmark include newly crowned SGP2 champion Mikkel Andersen, and Poland track a strong trio of Bartosz Banbor, Kevin Malkiewicz and Kacper Mania.
