WINNING DOUBLE TAKES SCUNTHORPE TO THE TOP OF THE TABLE
SCUNTHORPE are back on top of the Cab Direct Championship table after a 53-37 win over Redcar at the Eddie Wright Raceway.
The Scorpions completed the double over the Bears to also take the aggregate point, and they now have an eight-point gap on the teams outside the top four, including their opponents from Friday.
Josh Pickering roared to a 15-point maximum for the home side, including winning a terrific duel with Charles Wright in Heat 13, whilst youngster Luke Harrison won his first three rides to finish with 11.
Wright scored 14 from his six rides for the Bears but they only had three race winners in total, the other coming from former Scorpion Simon Lambert in Heat 8.
Scunthorpe manager David Howe said: “If you look at the scores I think the top five on both sides pretty much matched each other. Josh had another good meeting, but I think our reserves have made the difference.
“Young Ryan (Ingram) had a couple of lasts but three wins as well, so I think that’s been the major difference between the sides.”
Redcar boss Gavin Parr said: “We’ve been competitive all night, we went through a spate of 3-3s and got the 5-1 using the tactical, but they hit us straight back after that.
“I think if we’d got a couple of 3-3s it might have been a bit different, but I’ve really got no complaints about the riders. We’ve been competitive but just not quite there.
“Full credit to Scunthorpe, they’ve been excellent and hats off to them. I don’t think our riders rode particularly badly but Scunthorpe are on the crest of a wave at the moment.”

EDINBURGH won a key Armadale clash against Cab Direct Championship play-off rivals Plymouth to consolidate a top three place in the league table.
The Monarchs took a 52-38 victory on the night which also saw them claim the aggregate point and crucially put five points between themselves and the Gladiators in the standings.
Kye Thomson (12) and Dan Thompson (10) both hit double figures for the hosts but it was a complete team display with all six riders in the absence of Paco Castagna scoring at least paid nine.
That included reserves Jordy Loftus (8+3) and Mitchell Cluff (7+2) who outscored their Plymouth counterparts 15-2 – although the visitors’ top two did offer plenty of threat with Scott Nicholls on 12 and Danny King on 11+1.
Loftus said: “Very happy with the team’s performance, we all scored points and we got very few lasts.
“I’m quite happy with myself because I was paid for double figures and I’ve scored well in the last couple of home meetings.
“We knew we had to cover for Paco and we all scored points in his rides. It will be a confidence boost for tomorrow (Saturday) at Workington.”

OXFORD and Berwick both took some reward from Friday’s Cowley clash with the Cheetahs winning 52-38 but the Bandits taking the aggregate point.
The home side had the chance to overturn a 16-point deficit from the reverse fixture when a 5-1 in Heat 14 from Mitch McDiarmid and Dayle Wood gave them a 49-35 lead on the night.
But whilst skipper Sam Masters completed a 17-point haul for the Cheetahs in Heat 15, Bandits duo Nick Morris and Peter Kildemand secured a 3-3 with Kildemand getting the better of McDiarmid for third place.
Oxford’s young Aussie scored 11 from six rides whilst Morris led the Bandits’ scoring with 12 points and Kildemand picked up paid-11.

KING’S Lynn and Glasgow skipper Chris Harris is one of three British riders competing in Saturday’s Grand Prix Challenge in Italy.
Harris and Anders Rowe of Sheffield and Oxford are both just five rides away from reaching the full GP series in 2027 – but they will need to finish in the top four of a tough meeting at Terenzano to do so.
Meanwhile Robert Lambert is already a GP regular and sits third in this season’s standings, but the meeting gives him added insurance over his place for next year.
Both Harris and Rowe came through their qualifier at Glasgow in late May with Harris eyeing what would be a remarkable return to the sport’s top table after a decade away.
He said: “I’ve always had a fairly good record in the Challenges when I have been in them.
“It will be a lot tougher this time around. I am a lot older. The other guys are a lot younger and a lot faster. But I am always up for a challenge; I never back down from one.
“I think everyone in that field will look at me and probably not worry about me whatsoever. They won’t be scared that I am in the field, so I can just go there and enjoy it.
“Obviously, I want to go there and qualify, but I am not putting any pressure on myself that I have to qualify or do this or do that. I will just take every race as it comes.”
The line-up also includes Northampton No.1 Jaimon Lidsey, Edinburgh captain Paco Castagna, and recent Premiership riders Luke Becker, Maciej Janowski, Keynan Rew and Rohan Tungate.

WORKINGTON bid to bounce back from a bruising week when they host play-off chasing Edinburgh at the GT Tyres Arena today (Saturday, 6pm).
The Comets suffered home and away defeats to Poole in their last two matches, conceding 61 points at Wimborne Road on Wednesday.
But they are optimistic of returning to winning ways on their home circuit, with former club favourite Nicolai Klindt making a guest appearance at No.1 due to Polish commitments for Jonas Jeppesen, whilst Niklas Holm Jakobsen has been declared fit to race at reserve.
Comets boss James Denham said: “Poole was hugely disappointing because they were the better team, and the same can be said again after Wednesday’s meeting down there. We haven’t performed to the standards we set ourselves and we know we owe the fans a response.
“The only thing we can do now is dust ourselves down, learn from it and make sure we bounce back on Saturday. We want to restore a bit of pride in our performance and show the fighting spirit that this team is capable of producing.
“Edinburgh are another tough side and we know there’s no easy meetings in this league, but we’ve got to focus on ourselves. The aggregate point is also within reach being eight points down, so we are aiming for that.”

BERWICK return to Shielfield Park action tonight (Saturday) aiming to protect their 100 per cent home league record against Plymouth.
The Bandits are currently eighth in the Cab Direct Championship but a victory could lift them up several places – especially if they could also claim the aggregate point.
The Gladiators hold a 20-point advantage in that respect as they undertake the second of a three-match weekend northern tour which is crucial to their own play-off chances.
