FIM SPEEDWAY: DANISH RACER JEPSEN JENSEN: “BACK WHERE I BELONG” AHEAD OF MALILLA SPEEDWAY GP
Danish star Michael Jepsen Jensen admits “it’s exciting to feel like I belong” in the FIM Speedway Grand Prix World Championship as he bids to continue his comeback-season surge at the 2026 BST FIM Speedway GP of Sweden – Malilla on Saturday, July 11.
The Skrotfrag Arena, set in the heart of the stunning Swedish forests, stages its 20th Speedway GP event since the series was first contested here in 2005, but Jepsen Jensen will be making only his second Malilla SGP appearance.
He raced one full season as a permanent SGP rider in 2015, before largely disappearing from the world stage.
After two sublime seasons across Europe, culminating in MJJ winning Speedway GP qualification and lifting his first Danish Championship in 2025, the Grudziadz and Slangerup rider is finally back in the big time.
Despite starting the series with just two championship points in Landshut, the 34-year-old has reached three finals in four rounds since then.
He heads to Malilla placed fourth in the standings on 61 points – 21 behind leader Bartosz Zmarzlik – and is elated to be mixing it with the best – a chance he was not sure he would get again. He said: “It’s exciting to feel like I belong, and I have shown this for a couple of GPs. It’s not like I expected anything like this, but that’s why we are all here.
“There have been a lot of things stopping me from doing what I think I am capable of doing. To actually show that is very nice. It would have been good if I had been in a position to do it 10 years ago. But I was not. I am trying to take it day by day and prove I don’t suck.”
Jepsen Jensen is very much accomplishing that mission, but he’s also seeking to end a remarkable 14-year wait for a Speedway GP win.
He famously topped the 2012 FIM Nordic Speedway GP podium in Vojens as a wild card. After finishing second at Manchester R4, third in Wroclaw and fourth in Prague, MJJ would love to complete the set with a win.
He said: “I really want this win, and I feel it should have come in Wroclaw. But I will keep pushing and we will take it from there.
“When Bartek won in Wroclaw last time, I think he said it had been a long time since his last one a year ago, but I think I can beat that with 14 years. I will do whatever I can to get some good results. The main goal, of course, is the finals.
“I screwed up Landshut. But apart from that, we have been in the top six ever since, so I can be happy about that.”
Jepsen Jensen is just two points behind Britain’s Robert Lambert, who holds third place on 63 points. Reaching the rostrum would be a remarkable moment in MJJ’s career, and gold is still within reach with five rounds remaining. “That would be awesome,” he smiled. “We just need a few guys to screw up!”
