MATT JACKSON TAKES OUT THE SPEEDCAR FEATURE AT TOOWOOMBA
Sydney driver Matt Jackson took out his maiden Queensland feature race when won the Ian Boettcher Race Parts Danny Davidson Memorial race at the Hi-Tec Oils Toowoomba Speedway on ‘Pink Night’ Saturday, December 9. This meeting was rescheduled from the previous Saturday due to wet weather.
Jackson has been a regular visitor to Queensland in recent years and has always performed well but this time he was able to finish top of the podium. Starting from position four, he moved to second during the second rotation and then grabbed the top spot from Rusty Whittaker during lap 6. However, his work wasn’t finished.
Casey O’Connell (P3) moved to second and maintained constant pressure on the leader for the remainder of the race and was just .439 second behind at the chequered flag. Charlie Brown started from pole and dropped back a few spots in the opening laps but fought his way back to third at the end.
Twenty-nine cars fronted for the meeting and with such depth in the field, it wasn’t surprising to see six different heat winners. Tim Devine started his first race of the season in the first heat but had the misfortune to tumble on to the top of the wall in turn three and snagged the catch wire fence. He was uninjured but the catch fence required a replacement panel.
O’Connell, Whittaker, Brown, Jackson, Scott Farmer and Cal Whatmore were the heat winners with Brown’s time of 2:18.029 the quickest of the night. Five of the six heats went without a stoppage.
Due to the number of cars, a B Main was required and after a DNF in heat one due to damage when he made unavoidable contact with another car, Scott Farmer took the win with Kody Stothard, Andrew Parkes and comeback driver Graham Williams also gaining a start at the back of the feature.
Last start winner Scott Farmer had a big job ahead of him with a position 17 feature starting spot but passed twelve cars in 20 laps to finish the A Main in fifth. Eighteen of the twenty starters finished the A Main.
Sprintcar racer Brent Aprile had a good start to his Speedcar career finishing second in one heat and then racing mid-pack for the feature finally finishing 13th.
