WHYALLA SPEEDWAY COMMENCES
By Nigel Mills.
Speedway racing returns to Whyalla Saturday night November 20 with an action-packed program of entertainment to suit all speedway fans.
Round two of the Unearth Whyalla 410 Sprintcar Championship will be featured in addition to racing for street stocks V6 sprints, classic stockcars and a demolition derby.
Ryan Jones was an impressive first round winner, with a dashing front-running drive for the entire 30-lap final.
Ryan held off the challenges from Daniel Petska, with the unlucky Matt Egel a close third podium finisher.
The battle for line honours will be between the trio again, especially with Egel driving for a front grid position in the feature final, as was the case for Jones’ last meeting.
This was the difference in where the pair finished as Egel started out of grid five.
Another driver who lucked out was Lisa Walker, who was up with the leading group when she brushed the safety fence eight laps before the finish, forcing her to retire from the race.
However Walker will be one of the leading contenders again along with Keke Falland and James McHenry.
Matt Egel and the WER team were big winners at last weekend’s Murray Bridge meeting.
The MJS state series is one of the premier events on the streetstock calendar which has attracted a large number of entries, including local Michael Brown.
His best effort so far this season has been a third placing at Murray Bridge in September. Joining him are Adrian Jones, Denis Knowles, Jarrod Hamiltion and Bryan Brown.
The visiting drivers include Nigel Reichstein, a winner of two feature races at Murray Bridge already this season, and is a past Whyalla winner.
Mount Gambier driver Jayden Edwards, Phil Watson, and Mildura pair Albert and Wade fell among the top 20 nominations.
The night’s action will conclude with a demolition derby, with drivers to crash and bash in a bid to be the last car moving.
At the last meeting the club presented a life membership to committee member Travis Litterini, who has given more than 20 years of service to speedway in Whyalla.
