EDINBURGH produced a big finish to virtually secure their Championship play-off place with a 48-42 win at Newcastle.
The Monarchs trailed by four points with three heats remaining but completed the meeting with two 5-1s and a 4-2.
Richie Worrall (12) and Sam Masters (11+1) rounded things off with maximum points in Heat 15, whilst guest Ricky Wells top-scored for the Diamonds with 9+1.
Edinburgh star Josh Pickering (8+1) said: “I usually like it but tonight it wasn’t really a race-track, for one thing it was so dusty you couldn’t see, and for another there was no grip for racing.
“But the result was what we were looking for and I’m looking forward to the play-offs and also hopefully qualifying for the next round of the Cup.”

MILDENHALL closed the gap on National Development League leaders Berwick with a 47-41 win over Leicester.
The victory did come at a cost for the Fen Tigers as Luke Ruddick crashed out in his first ride and Sam Hagon was taken to hospital after a heavy fall in Heat 14.
Jordan Jenkins (10+1) and Jason Edwards (10) top-scored for the home side whilst a last-race 4-2 from Dan Thompson (11+2) and brother Joe (14) secured a league point for the visitors.
Mildenhall manager Malcolm Vasey said: “Whilst pleased with the victory, the loss of Luke and Sam was hard to take, and we hope that their injuries are not as bad as they seemed at the time.
“Sam has gone off to hospital for a full check-up and hopefully there is nothing too much to worry about there.
“We will regroup now and look ahead to our remaining meetings and keep pushing on the best we can in the circumstances we find ourselves in.”
Leicester boss Dave Howard said: “It was a good point which the guys worked really hard for, and it was a great effort from everyone.
“We kept in touch and pulled it back at the end to get the point, and it was a fighting display on what was a tricky track, with various delays because of crashes and damage to the fence.”
