As two-wheeled speedway revs up to celebrate their centenary at multiple events across New South Wales and Queensland, we ventured to a small suburb in in Melbourne to explore the history of four wheeled speedway!

Very few people know of the roots of Australian speedway on oval dirt tracks, but entrepreneur, race car builder and accomplished racer Jon Crooke has uncovered the foundations of our sport, in a suburb of Melbourne called Aspendale!

Join Speedway historian Dennis Newlyn, as he meets the Great Grandson of the founder of Aspendale Speedway, as well as a couple of well-known Victorian Speedway identities, Brett and Ray “Nippa” Lacey!

Max Grosskreutz 1920s legend

Our last genuine 1920s leg-trailing legend, Max Grosskreutz. His story, with the cooperation of his family. An Australian Champion, Test match captain, Maxie was the last of the original greats. His passing 30 years ago, aged 88, marked the end of grand era of speedway history.
