SGP EYES OFF AUSTRALIA AS FUTURE WORLD TITLE ROUND HOLDER

Australia is back on the map of the Speedway Grand Prix.

According to SGP information, a world championship GP round in 2028 is the long range plan.

Final details have yet to be announced but this latest news follows on from a pledge made by Richard Coleman, owner of Mayfield Sports Events when he said in November 2025 the goal of the Speedway Grand Prix series was a return to Australia.

“Of course we had inquiries from Australia and we are in contact with the activists there,” he explained.

“It’s the cradle of the speedway, but it’s also a long way from Europe. Given the Australians’ success, of course we would like the GP to be held there. It’s a business for us, not a charity. We need to have the right trading conditions for that. We will work on this project,” Richard Coleman told WP SportoweFacts.

The organisation of the Grand Prix round in Australia potentially represents a major success for the new promoter of the SGP and their intention to expand the world championship beyond Europe. It is also alleged there are three countries outside Europe that want to organise Speedway Grand Prix rounds.

“We are considering these ideas, we are checking whether this will be implemented at all. It’s a world championship and it would be great to go beyond Europe. That’s our goal, but I also don’t want to do what my predecessors did, which is to make promises that don’t have coverage on the calendar later. First, we need to stabilise the situation so as not to lose money,” Mr Coleman added..

“In the coming weeks, we should also know the calendar of the Grand Prix cycle for next season. In terms of Polish rounds, the hosts will be Warsaw, Wrocław and Toruń. The promoter’s dream is to organise a round in Spain, which has great traditions related to motor sport. A speedway track is being built in Spain.”
