BRITISH SPEEDWAY WEEKLY BULLETIN 2026/20
Feature photo by: IAN CHARLES…ROBERT Lambert roared to his third national title and his second in succession with a dominant display in the Cab Direct British Final at Belle Vue on Saturday evening.
Grand Prix star Lambert, who will lead Great Britain in the World Cup Final later this month, scored a 15-point maximum in the qualifying races and then converted that to overall victory in the Final.
Former champion Charles Wright stormed inside Leon Flint in the Grand Final to finish runner-up for the second season running, which also secured a Wild Card slot at next year’s British Grand Prix, and Flint finished third for his best-ever result in the meeting.
HERE’S the latest news and fixtures from around the tracks up and down the country.
ROWE MOTOR OIL PREMIERSHIP LATEST
HOW IT STANDS
BELLE Vue’s lead at the top of the table stands at nine points from Leicester, who collected four points from their last two matches and are four points away from clinching their own play-off place. Sheffield remain third, whilst Ipswich and King’s Lynn are separated by just one point, although that could increase ahead of their clash at the Adrian Flux Arena next Monday.
WITCHES START THE PARTY
IPSWICH will toast their 75th anniversary celebrations during Thursday’s home Premiership clash with play-off rivals.
Representatives from the Witches’ successful sides from the past will be in attendance along with extensive memorabilia displays reflecting on the club’s proud history.
Chairman Richard Coleman said: “We look forward to seeing our Ipswich legends back at Foxhall for this special night and we are working on inviting many more.
“I was delighted to take a look at Pete Rout and Jason Bullard’s collection of Witches race jackets, bikes and memorabilia at the Suffolk Show in May, and this is a must-see when fans visit Foxhall.
“Of course, this year’s team also has a big job to do on the track. We are yet to defeat the Lions at Foxhall this season and there could not be a better night for us to put that right.”
ACES MARCH ON
BELLE Vue moved closer to clinching top spot in the Premiership table with a thumping 55-35 win at Northampton on Thursday.
Norick Blodorn and Tate Zischke both continued their excellent progress this season by contributing double figures at the Shaleway.
Aces boss Mark Lemon said: “I didn’t really expect that scoreline to be quite honest, but I guess the boys are riding with a lot of confidence.
“The confidence is really high in the whole camp, and obviously when you’re flying high at the top of the table I guess that’s evident. It’s a nice result tonight.
“It’s been a really good season, and hopefully we will have even more to cheer about come play-off time.”
LIONS WOUNDED
LEICESTER have consolidated second place in the league standings with a solid pair of results, but the Lions now have fitness concerns over two riders.
Nick Morris and Dan Thompson crashed out in a spectacular incident at Northampton on Monday, where the visitors salvaged the aggregate point with two late 5-1s.
Manager Stewart Dickson said: “It’s probably another meeting that’s got away from us, but it wasn’t anyone’s fault and Northampton capitalised on our misfortune, which is something you have to do when that happens.
“We had a really good support there so at least we were able to come back for the point in the closing stages, but the most important thing is how these two boys are.”
ANOTHER STEP FOR TIGERS
SHEFFIELD manager Simon Stead regarded Monday’s win over King’s Lynn as another good move towards confirming a top four finish.
Stead had been disappointed with his side at Leicester last Thursday but they hit back at home with an eight-point win to keep the Stars at bay in the league table.
Said Stead: “It’s another point extra on King’s Lynn which means we’re now five ahead of them with four regular meetings to go.
“There’s still a lot of work to be done but tonight definitely feels like we’ve taken another step closer to securing yet another top four finish.”
POINT GAINED FOR STARS
KING’S Lynn moved a point nearer the top four when they held Sheffield to a 43-35 victory in a match curtailed by rain at Owlerton on Monday.
The Stars collected the aggregate point and now build up to a massive week which sees them face Ipswich at home and then travel to Northampton as they seek to break into the top four.
They did so despite losing reserve Jordan Jenkins with the effects of a Heat 2 crash, but fellow reserve Jody Scott stepped up with some impressive rides.
Manager Rob Lyon said: “I did fear that Jordan would be struggling once the adrenaline went away, but Jody had a great meeting tonight. Six points compared to his first visit here was a massive improvement, and it was a big step towards us getting that aggregate point.”
FOXES FIGHT BACK
NORTHAMPTON pulled off a strong comeback to secure their third Premiership win of the season, overcoming Leicester 47-43 at the Shaleway on Monday.
Manager Chris Adams praised an all-round team effort for his side who are now putting consistent home points on the board in their debut campaign.
Adams said: “It was a solid team effort and when all of your lads are scoring points, these are the sort of results you can get.
“I must say how pleased I was that both Dan Thompson and Nick Morris walked away from that crash, although obviously very sore and they couldn’t continue.”
THE WEEK AHEAD…
IPSWICH have a chance to add breathing space in the race for the top four when they host Leicester on Thursday… There is then a potentially massive East Anglian derby on Monday as the Witches travel to King’s Lynn defending a 13-point advantage for the aggregate point.
CAB DIRECT CHAMPIONSHIP LATEST
HOW IT STANDS
POOLE are three points clear at the top of the table and on the brink of confirming a top four finish, whilst Glasgow and Edinburgh are level on points with the Tigers having a match in hand. Scunthorpe complete the top four, with Redcar and Berwick both requiring a perfect run of results as they look to bridge a four-point gap to the Scorpions.
LIGHTCAP UP AND DOWN
POOLE newcomer Slater Ligthtcap reflected on a roller-coaster night at Edinburgh on Friday where he was worth far more than his 3+1 score, as the Pirates claimed the aggregate point.
Lightcap said: “I had an up and down meeting but overall it was good. I had a difficult time in Heat 2 with that mechanical lead but apart from that it was good fun.
“I was able to use Heat 1 as something of a practice session, trying to figure out which line to run and I learnt a lot about the track with that.
“I should be getting my Swedish engines over real soon and that will be better for me. I am grateful to Matt Ford for the loan of one the club’s engines to get me going, but once mine are over here I will feel better.”
TIGERS’ GREAT ESCAPE
GLASGOW boss Cami Brown praised his side for a “massive” comeback home win over Redcar.
The Tigers beat the Teessiders 48-42 in a hard fought Cab Direct Championship clash at Ashfield on Friday night, coming from eight points down to snatch the result in the final three races in dramatic style.
Brown said: “We left it very late again and that’s the third successive meeting we’ve done that. It was a breathtaking finale and not great for the blood pressure, it was great entertainment, great racing and a wonderful finish.
“All the boys got stuck in. I’m proud of what they have done and now we are only one or two wins away from booking our place in the play-offs.”
MONARCHS KEEP ON SCORING
EDINBURGH maintained their play-off charge with a hard-fought home win over Poole which saw them add two points to their Cab Direct Championship total.
The Monarchs are still well placed to finish in the top four, with a big home clash against Berwick to come on Friday.
Skipper Paco Castagna said: “I’m fairly happy about myself tonight, nine points on an engine that nearly went on me in Heat 14.
“I feel like I’ve got confidence back that was missing a couple of months ago. Very proud, blue and gold, another win!”
CHEETAHS ECLIPSED
OXFORD fell to a 47-43 home defeat to Workington in a meeting which was briefly delayed due to the solar eclipse!
The Cheetahs will complete their Championship campaign at Poole on Wednesday, although there are still three WSRA National Development League matches to come at Cowley.
Reserve Darryl Ritchings said: “It’s been tough at times this season, but I feel I’ve stepped it up in the last month or so, as I’ve adapted to riding in the Cab Direct Championship and how the track around here evolves on those evenings.
“My focus is now on the Oxford Chargers. I want to score as many points in those meetings around here so that we finish the season strongly.”
THE WEEK AHEAD…
POOLE can clinch their play-off place if they avoid defeat to Oxford on Wednesday… the leaders then visit Glasgow in a clash of the current top two on Friday… Also on that night, Edinburgh can put Berwick out of reach with a win over the Bandits at Armadale… Scunthorpe will look for maximum points against Workington… Saturday’s action sees Berwick host Redcar in a must-win meeting for both sides… Plymouth return to home track action against Workington, before hosting Glasgow next Tuesday.
WSRA NATIONAL DEVELOPMENT LEAGUE LATEST
HOW IT STANDS
EDINBURGH are four points clear at the top of the table, with Buxton now in second place after a third straight home win last weekend. Leicester are fourth but still have a 100 per cent record and are the most likely challengers to the Monarchs Academy.
CHARGERS CHASE HOME COMFORTS
OXFORD Chargers return to Cowley when they host Leicester in a bid to become the first team to defeat the Lion Cubs this season.
Manager Peter Schroeck said: “While Cheetahs have completed their official home fixtures, we’ve still got plenty of action to go at the BetGoodwin Oxford Stadium this season.
“With the Chargers, it’s about rider development first-and-foremost, while the lads never stop trying. Cheetahs may have finished, but please continue to support the club by supporting the Chargers, especially since Jody Scott and the rest of the team are now the main attraction at Oxford Speedway for the rest of the season.”
BULLS COMPLETE HAT-TRICK
BUXTON skipper Jack Smith was delighted with his side’s efforts as they made it three home wins on the bounce on Sunday.
The Bulls not only defeated Middlesbrough at Hi-Edge, they also chased down a 22-point margin and took the aggregate point in the last race for a 57-33 victory.
Smith said: “This was a fantastic result for us and a solid display throughout the team, and shows we are a match for anyone around here.
“While I’m sure many would have expected us to win the meeting I’m sure many people did not see us taking the aggregate point, and in doing so move us up into second place in the league table, and I’m absolutely delighted with the result today.”
THE WEEK AHEAD…
OXFORD have three home matches remaining and they host Leicester this Sunday with the Lion Cubs looking to extend their unbeaten record… Buxton host the Steve Casey Memorial Meeting at the Hi-Edge Raceway.
