PIRATE POWER
POOLE returned to the top of the Cab Direct Championship with a 52-38 win over Edinburgh on a bruising night at Wimborne Road.
The Monarchs lost reserve Jordy Loftus with concussion after a Heat 2 tangle with Kyle Newman, who continued to race but was then signed out at the end of the meeting.
Meanwhile a tough meeting for the visitors also featured a crash for Kye Thomson in Heat 13 and he is awaiting further assessment on leg and hip concerns after returning to the pits.
Pirates captain Zach Cook scored a 15-point maximum with Richard Lawson also unbeaten by an opponent as he tallied 11+4. Monarchs reserve Mitchell Cluff put in his best-ever performance for the club with 14 from seven rides.
Cook said: “Edinburgh pushed us from the start tonight and then they threw a tac sub in and that worked, so they will be happy to have pushed as hard as they did.
“Our main agenda was to be able to have a good lead for when we go up there next week, and everyone did their job tonight.
“It’s a shame that Kyle finished the meeting a bit sore, but the top five did a job and when we do that it takes the pressure off the reserves, and we can look back at this as a good result against one of the top clubs.”
Cluff said: “Seeing Jordy and then Kye go down wasn’t good, and we just had to keep pushing on. It was a tough night and we just need to look at winning the return and going for the aggregate.
“It was one of my better performances at Poole and I was happy. Gate four got me twice but apart from that I was happy.”

SCUNTHORPE lost the Cab Direct Championship leadership but gained an important aggregate point after a 51-39 defeat at Oxford.
Scorpions skipper Josh Pickering put on a sensational display and he would have scored an 18-point maximum but for blowing an engine when leading Heat 13.
However, he then overtook Cheetahs captain Sam Masters on the third lap of Heat 15 to prevent the need for a Super Heat.
Oxford were the more solid side on the night with Masters scoring 11+2, Anders Rowe 11 and Mitch McDiarmid 9+2, whilst Michael Palm Toft was the visitors’ only other race winner aside from Pickering, although Jacob Hook made an encouraging debut with two paid wins.
Pickering said: “I haven’t ridden my second bike since we had the home meeting against Oxford a few weeks ago and I had an engine failure in that meeting as well.
“It’s a decent engine, but it needed a bit of fine tuning. I threw everything at Sam in the final race and fortunately it paid off.
“If that hadn’t have happened and we’d lost the aggregate point, I’d have been very disappointed, because we needed that point. We came here to win, and it was important we left with something.”
Rowe said: “It was another confidence boasting meeting for me tonight and long may it continue. I have been riding well recently. I’ve got some good things happening with engines, and had plenty of meetings recently, because bike time always helps.
“Scunthorpe are a really good team – who are riding high in the league table – and it was awesome for us to beat them by as much as we did. All the boys chipped in and we all scored points.”

NEW-LOOK Northampton go into action for the first time since a team re-shuffle when they travel to Ipswich in the ROWE Motor Oil Premiership tonight (Thursday).
The Foxes have made two changes to their line-up with 2021 British Champion Adam Ellis and exciting Australian talent Mitch McDiarmid joining the club.
Ironically Ellis has spent the last two seasons with the Witches, whilst McDiarmid served notice of his potential with an impressive score of paid-11 in a guest appearance at Belle Vue on Monday.
It’s an important meeting for the Witches who are looking to move back into the play-off places, although the recent KO Cup Final defeat did feature some more exciting action from mid-season signing Kevin Juhl Pedersen.
Ipswich star Scott Nicholls said: “Kevin has come in and has been a breath of fresh air. He is certainly putting the effort in. He has put some points on the board, and that’s good to see. He will have gone to all of the tracks blind, but you can’t knock his effort.
“He has a positive attitude, he’s determined, I am pleased to have him in the team, and hopefully he can give us that extra bit of support at reserve.”
Foxes manager Chris Adams said: “As a club we needed to make changes for the last quarter of the season – not only for hopefully better results, but also looking forward and into next year.
“I’m looking forward to seeing Mitchell make his first appearance as a Fox. I feel he has been having a great season with Oxford, and he certainly turned some heads guesting for Belle Vue on Monday.
“Adam also comes into the side, and he rode for Ipswich last year, so having been there on a number of occasions this season and coming close to a win I’m hoping that our fortunes change and we can finish the season strong.”
Both sides track revised riding orders under new August averages, with Richard Lawson taking over as No.1 for Ipswich, and Niels-Kristian Iversen now in that position for Northampton.

SHEFFIELD will be hoping to keep their recent home run going when they host Leicester at Owlerton on tonight (Thursday).
The Tigers could make it three wins on the spin in the Steel City after some real plus point performances in S6 of late.
A 12-point victory over reigning champions Ipswich was followed up by a 58-32 trouncing of Northampton last Thursday – their biggest win of the season so far.
They face a Lions team who have experienced highs and lows in the last week, with their KO Cup Final victory against Ipswich followed up by a 61-29 thrashing at leaders Belle Vue on Monday.
The Tigers bring in Jason Doyle at No.1 to guest for the injured Jack Holder, whilst the visitors have Will Cairns standing in at reserve for the retired Kyle Howarth.
Sheffield manager Simon Stead said: “We can’t afford to lose or drop points at home – that’s a certainty. We need to be on fire at Owlerton and the guys are aware of that.
“We also know that Leicester are capable of coming to our place and doing a job so we can’t take our foot off the gas.
“We’ve had two solid performances at home in recent weeks – so long may that continue.”
Leicester boss Stewart Dickson said: “It’s going to be a tough night again, but we will certainly be better than we were at Belle Vue, I think that’s an obvious thing to say!
“We have the home match against Sheffield next week, so the target is to get as many points as we can there, and if there’s an opportunity for more then we’ll look to grab it.
“They’re coming into a bit of form, especially at home, and I think we should take it as compliment that they’ve got Jason Doyle racing against us, because they’ve been using rider replacement in their recent home matches.”

RESURGENT King’s Lynn Young Stars host WSRA National Development League leaders Edinburgh at the Adrian Flux Arena tonight (Thursday).
The Young Stars have won their last two matches, including an impressive 55-35 victory at Middlesbrough last weekend.
They once again call up Ryan Ingram and Jack Roberts to guest for injured duo Jack Kingston and Ollie Binns, whilst Dylan Huthwaite is in for Sam Woods who is also sidelined.
The Monarchs Academy will be without Jordy Loftus who suffered concussion in a crash at Poole on Wednesday.
King’s Lynn manager Jason Pipe said: “We won’t be letting them have it all their own way. We need to seek revenge for our 20-point loss up in Scotland three weeks ago.
“We are currently on a two meeting unbeaten run now, and if we are wanting to finish this season in the top half of the table, then we must be winning this meeting and then follow that up with another possible win away at Buxton this coming Sunday (9th).
“If results go our way over the next two meetings, then we could be sat in second place come Sunday evening.”
