 COMETS’ UPCOMING BIG WEEKEND

WORKINGTON are preparing to host the cream of the World’s top young talent with two major events over the weekend.

The Comets host the FIM Track Racing Youth Gold Trophy on Saturday, followed by the European 125cc Youth Track Racing Cup on Sunday.

Five of Great Britain’s youngsters – Lewis Hague, Fraser Buckle, George Climo, Douglas Marshall and Jessica Cox – will be featuring in a muti-national line-up which includes newly crowned SGP4 champion Blake Schlein of Australia.

Workington co-promoter James Denham said: “Young Schlein is definitely a superstar, he’s got everything.

“It’s brilliant for the club to host such a fantastic event, and to see some of the World’s youngest racers.
“These are probably future World Champions on 500s, riders who will be in the GP in ten years, so it’s fantastic for the club and hopefully we’ll have a few more coming down to cheer these young kids on.”

POOLE host Edinburgh in a big clash of top four rivals in the Cab Direct Championship at Wimborne Road tonight (Wednesday).

The Pirates are third in the table but will end the night top if they defeat the Monarchs and current leaders Scunthorpe miss out in their fixture at Oxford.

The teams previously met this season in the BSN Series semi-finals where Poole racked up a 60-point score at home – but co-promoter Dan Ford expects a much stronger test on this occasion.

Ford said: “They have picked up two away draws and a win in their last three away league matches since we eliminated them from the BSN Series, and I am sure that they will want to score far better this time around.

“But with our own fans right behind us we can certainly keep our push for top spot going.

“We all know that our riders have the same winning mentality as the management team have, and whilst we gave it our all at Plymouth on Saturday, to lose our unbeaten tag was a bit of a disappointment, so now is the time to start building again.”

OXFORD return to full strength for their home clash with Cab Direct Championship leaders Scunthorpe tonight (Wednesday).

Aussie youngster Mitch McDiarmid missed the Cheetahs’ dramatic draw with Poole last week due to SGP2 commitments, but he is back in the side tonight along with Edward Kennnett who was withdrawn from that meeting with a wrist injury.

The Scorpions hand a debut to new signing Jacob Hook, who has joined the club as a replacement for broken collarbone victim Dan Gilkes, and they travel with a 14-point advantage for the aggregate point.

Oxford manager Peter Schroeck said: “Much of Scunthorpe’s strength is at home, but they’ve had some decent results on the road as well. They’re top of the table for a reason.

“But I feel if we perform as we can – as we did against Poole last Friday – then we can win the meeting.

“We just need to keep up the positive results at home and continue to pick up the points, while treating our fans to more top-notch speedway and sending them home entertained.”

Scunthorpe promoter Rob Godfrey said: “We definitely want the aggregate point out of the meeting, but we’re travelling down to Oxford chasing a win.”
