BRITISH SPEEDWAY WEEKLY BULLETIN 2026/14
Feature photo by: TAYLOR LANNING…CAB Direct Championship leaders Glasgow consolidated their position with a 43-23 win over Oxford in a meeting curtailed by heavy rain at Ashfield on Friday.
The Tigers were well in control in the drizzle before a halt was called after 11 races, and they took match and aggregate points to stay top of the table.
HERE’S the latest news and fixtures from around the tracks up and down the country.
ROWE MOTOR OIL PREMIERSHIP LATEST
HOW IT STANDS
BELLE Vue remain top of the table despite not racing in the last week, with Leicester now second after their home wins over Northampton and Ipswich, and the Witches are now third after also being beaten at King’s Lynn. Sheffield are fourth with the fewest matches raced, whilst the Lynn slipped up at home to Northampton with a draw and are two points outside the top four, having raced two more matches than the Tigers, who they visit on Thursday.
LIONS UP TO SECOND
LEICESTER raced to back-to-back home wins over Northampton and Ipswich to add four points to their points total.
The Lions were without injured duo Ryan Douglas and Kyle Howarth for the second of those meetings, but they are optimistic that Douglas in particular will be back for the return fixture with the Witches at Foxhall on Thursday.
Manager Stewart Dickson said: “I do think we might have got the gate choices wrong – although it certainly wasn’t my decision! – so there’s a lesson learned on that, because one and three are so much better, so we have a bit of work to do on that.
“There are one or two wee things but all in all it was a good win, and also a good crowd considering we had two meetings in five days, so thanks to everyone who came out to support us.”
FOXES MAKE THEIR POINT
PREMIERSHIP newcomers Northampton secured their first away point in the league with a hard-fought 45-45 draw at King’s Lynn.
The Foxes now have renewed confidence ahead of a big home clash with league leaders Belle Vue on Tursday.
Co-promoter Tony Gaul said: “It was a great effort at King’s Lynn with the full team being together for the first time this season.
“We really are starting to get going now, and ten heat wins last night of the 15 shows how close we are getting. When all seven click together, which will happen soon, more wins will come, but a draw at King’s Lynn is a vast improvement.”
HURRY PRAISE FOR BRENNAN
IPSWICH manager Paul Hurry admitted a practice day did Tom Brennan a world of good as he enjoyed an upturn in form with two race wins at Leicester on Monday.
But with skipper Danny King injured and Richard Lawson ruled out on the eve of the fixture due to illness, the Witches went down to a second away defeat in succession despite the impressive efforts of Tobiasz Musielak.
Hurry said: “Tom is coming back into form. He just seemed a bit more relaxed in himself. There was less pressure. He had a practice day on Sunday, and it just made him feel good and confident. It took the pressure off him.
“He rode his bike all day. He just rode round and round and round. He didn’t really test anything. It was just bike time. That goes to show what riding can achieve. It works.”
STARS SLIP UP
KING’S Lynn experienced the high of a big local derby win, plus aggregate point, against Ipswich – but the Stars were brought down to earth less than a week later by being held to a home draw by Northampton.
Manager Rob Lyon said: “It was the same as the last couple of times they were here, they were quite determined and dogged, and fair play to them for that.
“It’s disappointing if I’m honest, especially after Thursday when we had a good win, but it’s the same old story really. We just aren’t consistent enough.”
WHERE THERE’S A WILL
IN-FORM Belle Vue youngster Will Cairns says he’s enjoying the moment as he makes a big impact in both his domestic racing and in international commitments.
Cairns, who has just turned 17, is scoring good points for the Premiership leaders and has also qualified for the SGP2 (World Under-21 series), as well as leading Great Britain into the European Pairs Final.
He said: “A few people have asked me what my goals are now, now that I’ve completed most of my goals, but I couldn’t tell you!
“I’m just going to ride the wave as they say, and take it step by step, round by round and see where we end up.”
THE WEEK AHEAD…
A PACKED Thursday evening sees all six Premiership teams in action as leaders Belle Vue travel to Northampton, whilst Ipswich and Leicester are level on points ahead of their clash at Foxhall, and Sheffield host King’s Lynn… There is also one match on Monday with Belle Vue facing Northampton in a Round 2 fixture.
CAB DIRECT CHAMPIONSHIP LATEST
HOW IT STANDS
GLASGOW and Scunthorpe were both winners at home on Friday and they hold the top two positions, with Edinburgh three points behind the Scorpions with two matches in hand. Poole are fourth, but have only raced three league matches, whilst Redcar were the big movers of the week with their big win at Plymouth taking them into fifth place. Berwick and Oxford are the only two teams without an away win, although the Bandits have raced just once on the road.
BEARS’ STUNNING WEEKEND
REDCAR enjoyed their best weekend of the season with a 27-point win over Berwick to put one foot firmly in the BSN Series Final, which would mean a repeat of last year’s decider against Poole.
The Bears then followed that up with a remarkable 56-34 away victory at Plymouth to move above the Gladiators in the Cab Direct Championship table.
Manager Gavin Parr said: “It’s been a very positive 24 hours for us and it certainly gives us a boost of confidence for the rest of the season.
“I’m really pleased for everyone involved with the Bears. To only run one last place in 15 heats shows what we can do when we all click.”
TIGERS ON TOP
GLASGOW manager Cami Brown knows his side will still face a challenge in maintaining their position at the summit of the Cab Direct Championship.
The Tigers kept their winning run going in a weather curtailed clash with Oxford, defeating the Cheetahs 43-23 at Ashfield.
Brown said: “It’s great to be top of the league but we have raced more than the other clubs around us. The only objective is to stay in the top four and reach the play-offs.
“Everyone did what they had to do tonight. We definitely need more home meetings, to go seven weeks without a team meeting at Ashfield is hard to deal with.”
BANDITS STICK WITH JJ
BERWICK co-owner Jamie Courtney has opened up on the decision to retain the services of short-term signing Jordan Jenkins, which spelt bad news for Lasse Fredriksen.
Courtney said: “JJ made a compelling argument to become a full time Bandit and we are delighted to sign him permanently. If we hadn’t someone else would have, that’s for sure. Not that they got the opportunity.
“With Reid (Battye) also chomping at the bit, the opportunity to redeclare the side was taken which, sadly, means that we had to release Lasse.
“He hasn’t really done much wrong in his time at Berwick but, as the cliché goes, British speedway is a numbers game. It’s a judgement call but the one we have made is that going forward Jordan rather than Lasse fits the bill better.”
SCORPIONS TRAVELLING WELL
SCUNTHORPE promoter Rob Godfrey says strong results on their travels are set to give the Scorpions maximum opportunities for three-point hauls when they race at the Eddie Wright Raceway.
Godfrey said: “Not many people fancied us to do anything away from home this season so we have confounded the critics already with the results at Redcar, Workington and Edinburgh.
“Those away results have given us excellent opportunities to add to our tally of aggregate points in the coming weeks and that will be crucial in the battle for a play-off place.”
BOWES SITS OUT
POOLE’S Australian racer Fraser Bowes has been ruled out for the remainder of the season having been diagnosed with a central disc protrusion in his back.
Bowes said: “After speaking with my medical team, I’ve made the difficult decision to end my season and focus on getting this properly repaired so I also don’t have any long term issues.
“There are options that would allow me to keep riding with injections, but that would only mask the pain and risk making the injury worse in the long term. As difficult as it is to accept, this is the right decision for both myself and the team.
“It’s a hard pill to swallow because I felt like I was starting to turn a corner during that match with Oxford, but sometimes your health has to come first. I’ll now put all my focus into my rehabilitation and do everything I can to come back ready for next year.”
MASTERS STARS BUT CHEETAHS BEATEN
OXFORD skipper Sam Masters produced one of the individual performances of the season with his 17-point haul at Berwick on Saturday.
But with Masters scoring all but 20 of the Cheetahs’ points on his own, the team was beaten 53-37 as they returned home from their Northern tour without adding to their league total.
Masters said: “Berwick have a very good side this season, especially around here. It took a while for our boys to find their feet tonight.
“It’s a very daunting track and it’s not easy and it’s fast. You’ve got to grit your teeth and put the bike in the dirt. The boys showed towards the end what they can do.”
THE WEEK AHEAD…
WITH leaders Glasgow turning their attention to Saturday’s Scottish Cup clash with Edinburgh, the chasing pack have the chance to close in… Scunthorpe will go top if they keep their home run going against Oxford on Friday… Edinburgh are currently third ahead of their clash with resurgent Redcar on Friday… Plymouth visit bottom club Oxford on Wednesday with both sides looking to bounce back from tough weekends… The Gladiators then host Berwick at the Coliseum on Saturday.
WSRA NATIONAL DEVELOPMENT LEAGUE LATEST
HOW IT STANDS
OXFORD’S win at King’s Lynn last week has moved them up to second in the table, two points behind leaders Edinburgh albeit having raced one more match. The Monarchs Academy and Leicester both maintain 100 per cent records whilst the Young Stars and Buxton are yet to get off the mark.
CHARGERS SHINE AGAINST YOUNG STARS
OXFORD Chargers completed the double over King’s Lynn with a 52-38 win at the Adrian Flux Arena last Tuesday.
Youngster Harry Fletcher impressed once again with 13+1 at reserve, whilst captain Jody Scott showed his track knowledge with a 15-point maximum.
Scott said: “It’s special to score a maximum around here for the Chargers, since King’s Lynn is my local track – I live just a few miles down the road – and also King’s Lynn are my Premiership club.
“There is a great atmosphere around this team and we were talking to each other throughout the night. It was great to take all three points, including the aggregate point, especially since the Young Stars have a decent side.”
MORE CHANGES FOR LYNN
KING’S Lynn have recalled Kenzie Cossey ahead of their home clash with Leicester, as Connor King makes way in the one-to-seven.
But the Young Stars are facing up to time without impressive reserve Ollie Binns who suffered a broken wrist last week.
Manager Jason Pipe said: “Connor is very race rusty, but we have a very short season of only 10 meetings and we can’t wait around for him to get up to race speed.
“I’ve also explained to Connor that I couldn’t justify leaving him in the team at the expense of Kenzie Cossey, so Kenzie is now back in our redeclared 1-7. Kenzie will find it tough in the top five, but he won’t let that affect him and there’s no pressure been put on him.”
THE WEEK AHEAD…
KING’S Lynn have another chance to get off the mark in the NDL but they face a tough test against 100 per cent Leicester at the Adrian Flux Arena on Wednesday… The Lion Cubs then host Oxford on Sunday, but their scheduled trip to Middlesbrough on Saturday has been postponed due to clash with England’s World Cup quarter-final against Norway.
