BRITISH SPEEDWAY WEEKLY BULLETIN 2026/10
Feature photo by: IAN CHARLES…BELLE Vue captain Brady Kurtz leads the World Championship after winning Saturday’s FIM ATPI Speedway Grand Prix of Manchester in one of the series’ all-time great Finals.
Kurtz, who had added 18 points to his title challenge when finishing runner-up to Max Fricke on Friday, came from last to first in an extraordinary climax to a weekend packed with top-quality action, and it saw him overhaul defending champion Bartosz Zmarzlik in the overall standings.
Kurtz was in fourth place on the first lap, but he got the better of Michael Jepsen Jensen, Zmarzlik and Sheffield star Jack Holder in a race which will live long in the memory for all in attendance at the National Speedway Stadium.
The Australian will now wear the leader’s Golden Jacket going into the next round of the Championship at Wroclaw, Poland, on Saturday June 20.
ROWE MOTOR OIL PREMIERSHIP LATEST
HOW IT STANDS
NO change to the Premiership position after last Thursday’s fixtures at Northampton and Ipswich were called off, whilst Monday was a scheduled blank date in the calendar. Belle Vue have a three-point lead at the top over Leicester and Sheffield, with the Lions having two matches in hand.
AUSSIE DELIGHT FOR LEMON
BELLE VUE CEO Mark Lemon had special reason to take pride in the results of last weekend’s GPs at the National Speedway Stadium.
Max Fricke, Brady Kurtz and Jack Holder formed an all-Australian podium in Round 3 on Friday, and Aces skipper Kurt then won an epic Final of Round 4 24 hours later.
Lemon said: “Brady’s ride in the Final on Saturday was absolutely outstanding, and I’m not sure when was the last time Bartosz (Zmarzlik) was passed from the lead in a Final.
“Having three Aussies on the podium on Friday was of course pretty special for me, and really the only downside was the fact that we were missing Dan (Bewley). That would have been the icing on the cake, especially with the form he was in, but he was certainly there in spirit.”
KING BACKING FOR TOBI
IPSWICH skipper Danny King says the club are set to see the very best of Polish star Tobiasz Musielak over the coming weeks.
Musielak, a former title winner with Swindon, is in his first season at Foxhall and he played a starring role in the recent narrow victory over Northampton.
King said: “Tobi is really finding his form, which I believed he would. He’s a very good rider.
“When we signed him, I was really pleased because I don’t think we’ve seen the best of Tobi in the last few years. But I really feel we are going to see it again this season.”
ADAMS PRAISE FOR BOMBER
NORTHAMPTON manager Chris Adams has given his thanks to GB stalwart Chris Harris for accepting a short-notice guest booking for the Foxes.
Harris stepped in for the recent away match at Ipswich after Niels-Kristian Iversen had been injured in Denmark the previous night, and he scored double figures in a narrow defeat at Foxhall.
Adams said: “When I contacted Chris to step in as a guest, there was no hesitation in his voice for one minute. He just simply replied… ‘Yes, I’m available, see you there.’
“Some may comment about all the clubs he’s ridden for over the years or how many guest bookings he takes, but you can’t deny his dedication to the sport and just how much he likes riding.”
WINNING WEEKEND FOR STARS
KING’S Lynn will welcome back their weekend winners when they return to action against Northampton next Monday.
Max Fricke was victorious in the first Grand Prix in Manchester on Friday, whilst reserves Cooper Rushen and Jody Scott then finished first and second on the British Under-21 Final at Redcar on Sunday.
Fricke said: “I’m happy to be up here. I just kind of kept my head down all night and didn’t get too ahead of myself, and my team have done a great job of giving me a bike that was fast tonight.
“In my last heat it was dry and then by the time we went out for the Final it was wet, and I didn’t ride in the semi (LCQ) so there was a bit of a gap, but I think we stuck with what we knew and it paid off.
“I’ve definitely been pushing uphill in the first couple of rounds, and the fall in Prague didn’t help, but it’s nice to bounce back.”
THE WEEK AHEAD…
THE current top two in the ROWE Motor Oil Premiership table, Belle Vue and Leicester, meet at the National Speedway Stadium on Monday… Prior to that, the Lions have a home clash with Ipswich on Thursday in a prelude to the KO Cup Final between the clubs, whilst third placed Sheffield host Northampton… The Foxes then visit King’s Lynn on Monday.
CAB DIRECT CHAMPIONSHIP LATEST
HOW IT STANDS
CHAMPIONSHIP action resumes this week with Poole on top of the table with a 100 per cent record, one point ahead of Scunthorpe. Edinburgh are in third place with Plymouth in the final play-off position ahead of Glasgow on race points difference.
CHEETAHS’ KEY MOVE
OXFORD manager Peter Schroeck says the recent move to sign Edward Kennett was an important one to bring the Cheetahs back up to full strength.
Kennett is set to make his debut at Workington on Saturday after the scheduled home clash with Redcar last week was rained off.
Schroeck said: “It made a lot of sense to sign a rider based in this country. It can become a logistical nightmare when signing a rider based in Europe during the season – we know that from experience.
“A big thank you to Nick Morris and all the other riders who have stood in for Erik, but we couldn’t keep on using guests. Otherwise, we could end up going, for example, to Plymouth and finding no-one is available to guest that night. We need seven of our own riders.”
BEARS PLAN THEIR RESPONSE
REDCAR co-promoter Jamie Swales admits the recent home defeat to Scunthorpe has acted as a major wake-up call to his team.
Swales said: “On paper we had a decent start to the season, but I always felt there was just an underlying thing where it wasn’t quite clicking and we needed a little bit more, and I definitely think that’s shown up over the last few meetings.
“It was a bit of a shock against Scunthorpe after we’d thrashed them earlier in the year, that one definitely hurt, and we’ve had a lot of talks since then.
“We like to work with our riders and I think we have so much potential in our team. Last year was our best-ever season, so to swing to this now is hard for some people to take, but I think they trust us enough to know it’s not acceptable for us. We’re not a sacking club either, and we need to work with what we’ve got, and try to drive them forward.”
RUSHEN CELEBRATES U21 TITLE
POOLE youngster Cooper Rushen moves up into the main body of the team this week with the British Under-21 title now in his possession.
Rushen was victorious at Redcar last Sunday, winning the national crown at the age of just 16 as he continues an incredible first season at senior level.
He said: “I think I’m in a dream at the minute! This event last year was kind of haunting me throughout the year, I had a terrible run at the Qualifier and never even made it through to the Final, so to get through this year was a bonus.
“Then to have a Final like that, out there with some of my best mates in speedway, ripping around the boards and enjoying what we’re doing – I’m happy for myself and happy for everyone competing.”
JENKINS BACK IN BUSINESS
JORDAN Jenkins has joined Berwick on a 28-day deal to cover for the injured Reid Battye.
Jenkins recently left Championship rivals Redcar, and he will make his Bandits debut in their home clash with Glasgow on Saturday.
He said: “I’d like to thank everyone at Berwick for giving me this opportunity. I’m really looking forward to being part f the team. I can’t wait to get started and meet the supporters.”
PACO SITS OUT
EDINBURGH captain Paco Castagna faces a period on the sidelines as he looks to fully recover from a hand injury.
Castagna has been riding through the pain barrier since his crash against Redcar back in April and following scans has now been diagnosed with thumb ligament damage.
The Italian star will undergo treatment in a bid to return as quickly as possible.
THE WEEK AHEAD…
WITH leaders Poole not in league action this week, the clubs immediately below them clash on Friday as second placed Scunthorpe visit Edinburgh currently in third… Berwick get back into action on Saturday at Shielfield Park when they host Glasgow, whilst Workington face Oxford at the GT Tyres Arena… Poole are in BSN Series action with the second leg of their semi-final against Edinburgh, who lead 46-44 as they head to Dorset on Wednesday… Redcar and Plymouth meet twice in two nights with a MAXiCab KO Cup Final place up for grabs, starting at the Ecco Arena on Friday with the return at the Coliseum just under 24 hours later.
