DECISION TO STAY IN PERTH IS A WINNER FOR DAY
The decision to stay in Western Australia a little bit longer than planned paid off for American Corey Day at the Perth Motorplex on Friday night, JANUARY 2.
Driving the #U3, he won the Merger Contracting Sprintcar Muster from fellow American Cole Macedo and National Champion James McFadden.
After he had a costly DNF in the High Limit International finale at the Perth Motorplex on Tuesday night, when in a commanding position, Day said he had unfinished business. Post-race he said it was going to be a year before he returned to Western Australia, so he figured a couple more days in town wouldn’t hurt.
Day started the 30-lap final, which was round 10 of the Maddington Toyota Sprintcar Series, from position six after earlier in the show he was the quickest car in qualifying three. He was then fourth in his heat race and crossed the line third in the Revolution Racegear B Dash.
Day moved forward in the second half of the battle and on lap 22 he showed his nose to Macedo who led for most of the journey. Two laps later he got to the front and increased his margin to win in heavy lapped traffic.Macedo was left wondering after dominating most of the main event.
He started on the outside of the front row, next to polesitter Daniel Harding. Macedo was second in qualifying four, beaten by Brad Sweet who set the Victory 1 Performance Quick time. He was then second in his heat race and won the Revolution Racegear B Dash.
Post-race, Macedo said he had a good car package with the HighLine Motorsport U40, and was hopeful of a win in Western Australia before he finished his local tour.
McFadden started the night with a fourth in qualifying 3, followed by a win in heat 3, a second in the B Dash and third in the final after starting from p4. The final didn’t start well, with Ryan Lancaster spinning in turn one on the first lap and collected by Tim King who had nowhere to go.
Shortly afterwards Jason Kendrick rolled at the opposite end of the track, ending his night, while American Carson Macedo was sent to the rear of the field, deemed the cause of the incident that also saw Taylor Milling, Andrew Priolo, Queenslander Luke Oldfield and Kris Coyle head to the work area.
Brad Maiolo, who started third, put in one of his best drives of the season to finish fourth, ahead of Sweet, who started eighth and finished fifth.
Kaiden Manders started seventh and finished sixth, from Dayne Kingshott who finished seventh after starting from p15, American Aaron Reutzel, who was eighth (started p13), Carson Macedo who made his way back up to ninth from the rear and Callum Williamson who rounded out the top 10 (started p9).
Kerry Madsen was 11th (from p12), American Brock Zearfoss 12th (from p11), Oldfield 13th (from p27), Mikey Green 14th (from p5), Coyle 15th (from p24), Harding 16th (from pole), Cameron McKenzie 17th (from p17), James Inglis 18th (from p26), Jaydee Dack 19th (from p19), AJ Nash 20th (from p22), Aaron Chircop 21st (from p23), Andrew Priolo 22nd (from p21), Kodi Clayden 23rd (from p28), Jason Pryde 24th (from p25) and Taylor Milling 25th (from p16).
Heat wins went to Callum Williamson, Kendrick, McFadden and Manders, with Reutzel winning the BR Motorsports / King Racing Products Midpack and Priolo winning the Last Chance Qualifier.
Round 11 of the Maddington Toyota Sprintcar Series heads to Bunbury Speedway tonight, for its only appearance on the South West track for the season.
It will be the first chance to test the new clay surface recently dropped in. It will also be the sixth of the eight-round Speedweek series.
The overall winner of Speedweek will receive $10,000 from a $30,000 prize purse that goes to the top 15 overall – thanks to $20,000 from Speedway Australia, $5000 from the Sprintcar Entrants Group and $5000 from the Perth Motorplex.
