On the back of his barnstorming run from position 28 to second two nights earlier, American Corey Day claimed night one of High Limit International at the Perth Motorplex on Sunday night, December 28.
Driving the #U3, Day started from position four to take the win from local drivers Kaiden Manders (who started from pole) and Dayne Kingshott (out of p3).
Day bolted to second early on and after following Manders for about the first nine laps, took over the lead which he held for the rest of the race, apart from a couple of laps, from lap 22.
He started the night by being third quickest in his qualifying flight, then took a heat race win, and went from seventh to fourth in the Dash.
Manders, who has already claimed two wins in the Maddington Toyota Sprintcar Series this season, earnt the right to start on pole after being fourth quickest in the second qualifying group, then taking wins in both his heat race and the Dash.
It was a big improvement for the driver of the Dan Golding Racing #W71 who was 11th in the Boxing Day show 48 hours earlier.
Kingshott, the defending local series champion, was the quickest in the second qualifying session and backed this up with a fifth in his heat race and a third in the Dash.
His latest podium result follows a fourth on Boxing Day.
Before the field took the green, the order had to be reshuffled when James Inglis, who was to start from p9, headed to the infield work area to change a flat left rear tyre, starting the race from the rear.
Tasmanian Jock Goodyer was fourth (after starting from p2), ahead of the Boxing Day winner Buddy Kofoid who started and finished fifth.
Australian Champion James McFadden was sixth (after starting from p11), from Callum Williamson in seventh (from p8), Americans Cole Macedo in eighth (after starting from p6), Brock Zearfoss ninth (from p14) and Brad Sweet in 10th (from p17).
Kerry Madsen moved up a handful of spots to take 11th, from Queenslander Luke Oldfield who dropped from seventh to 12th, Daniel Harding who went from 18th to 13th, American Justin Whittall who went from p22 (after qualifying via the B Main) to finish 14th, and fellow American Carson Macedo who dropped from 10th to 15th.
Jason Kendrick started 15th and took 16th, while inaugural High Limit International: Perth winner Kyle Larson was 17th, after starting 12th.
Kofoid was the quickest overall in qualifying to set the Victory 1 Performance Quick Time.
Day, Cole Macedo, Goodyer and Manders won the heats, while Cameron McKenzie won the B Main to start from p21 and finish 18th in the A Main.
American Aaron Reutzel failed to set a qualifying time, crashing the Monte Motorsport 17 into the pits bend fence, putting him at a disadvantage from the start.
He moved up a few spots in this race race after starting from the rear – and then went from ninth to fourth in the B Main, taking the last qualifying spot, and ultimately being 21st in the 30-lapper.
Taylor Milling crashed out in heat two which seeded him in 19th in the B Main and he was only able to make up two spots.
The second night of the three-night show will be held at the Perth Motorplex on Monday night, with the $110,000 to win finale slated for Tuesday night.
