The Sprintcars put on a show at the bp Adelaide Grand Final on Thursday night, November 27) with Jamie Veal winning a thrilling three-way tussle.
Veal overcame battles with Dylan Jenkin and Marcus Dumesny to emerge victorious from the entertaining 35-lap A Main.
It was the second night of three for the Sprintcars in the City with the hope the storms don’t wash out tonight’s finale.
Having dominated the Dash, Veal started from pole, but did not get a good launch and slumped to third.
Dumesny did get a good launch, but so did Jenkin from third, who threw it down the inside.
Dumesny and Jenkin went side by side for the entire first lap before the former prevailed.
Sadly just three laps were possible before the reds arrived for Brock Hallett, who endured a slow roll over at Turn 3.
Jy Corbet escaped danger after a 360 spin, while James McFadden was also lucky to emerge unscathed, unlike Lachlan McHugh, who suffered a flat front left tyre. Just three more laps were possible before more madness occurred at Turn 3.
Corbet and Kinser Claridge got tangled up and took each other out, while Thomas Meseraull had a 360 spin and carried on. Dumesny controlled the restart as Jenkin and Veal battled hard for second.
Veal hung tough around the outside for three laps before eventually slotting back behind the #S50. But within five laps Dumesny’s lead had suddenly evaporated. Jenkin sensed his moment on Lap 15 and threw the #S50 down the inside at Turn 1. Despite getting some air as he bounced across the apron, he forced himself into the lead.
Dumesny’s hopes were quickly fading as he also could not stop Veal from flying past, while Jock Goodyer soon knocked him out of the top four.
Attention had now turned to the front of the field with Veal catching underdog Jenkin. The pair battled hard on Lap 21, but a fine dive down the inside proved to be the race-winning move for Veal. He dominated the closing stages to take a strong 1.7a win over Jenkin and Goodyer.
Matt Dumesny also put on a show, charging from the back to sixth.
Veal said starting at the front on the small NAPA Speedway was a vital ingredient.
“Hats off to the boys for giving me a decent race car,” he said. “I had a bit of luck in the Dash and starting up front is key on this track.”
Jenkin was clearly the most emotional on the podium and could not quite believe it.
“This is a pretty good result! This result for my team is just massive and never thought we would be up here,” he said.“Cannot thank my team and family enough because they made this happen. “Apologies to Jamie there at the start. I am not sure what happened and didn’t think I did too much wrong, but this is tight racing.”
In the Speedcars, the reigning champion Kaidon Brown went back-to-back in grand style.
He kept the O’Connell brothers at arm’s length throughout the 20-lap feature with Casey getting the better of Cody.
However, the driver who turned the most heads was Mitch Saunderson. Many were amazed he survived a wild airborne moment at Turn 3, which brought out the red flags, sitting ninth. However, he carried on and went from the back to 11th.
Action resumes at NAPA Speedway at 18.24 with Sprintcars and Speedcars again on show.
