Feature photo by: TAYLOR LANNING…POOLE retained the Cab Direct Championship after a remarkable finish to a thrilling Grand Final second leg at Glasgow.
The sides were incredibly tied 90-90 at the end of the regular 30 races across the Final, leading to a Super Heat decider.
The Pirates looked set to seal it in Heat 15 only for a spectacular effort from Chris Harris which saw him overtake both Richard Lawson and Zach Cook to complete a 15-point maximum on the night, as Glasgow won the second leg 51-39.
But the defending champions had the final say in the Super Heat as Cook and Lawson rounded Kyle Howarth off the second bend and completed the four laps in front to take the title in dramatic fashion.
HERE’S the latest news and fixtures from around the tracks up and down the country.
CAB DIRECT CHAMPIONSHIP LATEST
PIRATES SEAL SENSATIONAL TITLE
POOLE are Cab Direct Championship title winners for a fourth time in five seasons after overcoming league leaders Glasgow in a thrilling finale at Ashfield on Friday.
The Pirates and the Tigers were level on aggregate at 90-90 after the second leg of the Grand Final, before Richard Lawson and Zach Cook got the better of home duo Chris Harris and Kyle Howarth in a tense Super Heat decider.
Poole co-boss Gary Havelock said: “The only thing I can relate tonight’s tension to was my first full season for Poole in 1999 when we went to King’s Lynn and had to win, but went down in the last race.
“Me and Mark Loram couldn’t stop Tony Rickardsson and Leigh Adams – they’re not bad riders, are they?
“But tonight was special. To see our 12-point lead ebb away and Richard’s incident in Heat 13 not helping, and Will (Cairns) breaking down in 14 just all added to the pressure.
“But Zach and Rich were just unbelievable. I said to them both, ‘go out and make yourself a hero,’ and Zach will be remembered forever for that. This whole meeting will be. Incredible.”
TIGERS PROUD IN DEFEAT
GLASGOW boss Cami Brown said his side could have fought no more as they took the Cab Direct Championship Grand Final right down to the wire.
Skipper Chris Harris scored arguably the most spectacular 15-point maximum ever seen at Ashfield but he and Kyle Howarth lost out in a heartbreaking Super Heat for the home side.
Brown said: “This is how good this sport can be. On a brilliant and fair racetrack speedway can just be absolutely sensational entertainment.
“I can’t fault any of our boys. They rode their hearts out and nearly pulled it off. It was such a great performance to beat Poole by 12 points, equalling their heaviest defeat of the season.
“But obviously it’s so frustrating to miss out and get so close. But I can’t complain because the boys did everything they could.
“Lastly I have to say a massive thank you to the fans for making it such a noisy and wonderful occasion. Our supporters have been outstanding all season.”
BEARS ON THE UP
REDCAR co-promoter Jamie Swales says 2025 will go down as another season of continued progress regardless of the outcome of this week’s BSN Series Final.
The Bears won the Championship Pairs in April but saw their league and MAXiCab KO Cup hopes ended by Poole, and they take a narrow 46-44 lead to Wimborne Road on Wednesday as they go for more silverware.
Swales said: “Apart from 2024, which actually wasn’t a ‘bad’ year, we are making progress each year.
“We are really competing with Poole and Glasgow now, which is a credit to the club.
“Other clubs now see us as a genuine threat and one day we are going to get over the line for a title, and we aren’t going to give up until we do.”
OXFORD STAGE FOURS FINALE
OXFORD have one more meeting at Cowley this season as they host a special Four Team Tournament on Thursday featuring Select teams representing Coventry, Swindon and Wolverhampton against the Cheetahs.
All three visiting sides are huge names in the sport who always pulled in big crowds, but are currently unable to race having lost the use of their venues due to decisions by landowners.
Oxford manager Peter Schroeck said: “We wanted one more meeting at the BetGoodwin Oxford Stadium this season.
“We didn’t want to finish our home meetings on September 28, while we were well aware that most of the supporters have not seen our victorious Chargers since they won the WSRA National Development League at Middlesbrough.
“But it’s not just about Oxford Speedway. The meeting is also to highlight Swindon, Coventry and Wolverhampton.”

THE final action of the season at Championship level is the second leg of the BSN Series Final at Poole on Wednesday, with the Pirates two points behind Redcar as they look to secure another trophy Treble… Meanwhile on Thursday Oxford stage a Four Team Tournament featuring Select sides representing Coventry, Swindon and Wolverhampton.
WSRA NATIONAL DEVELOPMENT LEAGUE/NATIONAL DEVELOPMENT TROPHY LATEST
KEY POINT FOR EAGLES
KENT maintained second position in the National Development Trophy table by securing the aggregate point from their trip to Plymouth on Saturday.
The Centurions won the match 51-38 having taken two 5-1s in the last two races, but the Eagles are still in the runners-up spot and will maintain it if they can defend a six-point aggregate margin at Leicester this Sunday.
Stand-in Kent boss Emily Humphrey said: “Well done to Plymouth, we gave them a run for their money and for a time we thought that we had them, but in the end they proved worthy winners.
“However, we were determined to claim the aggregate point and we did just that, so effectively we achieved what we came here to do.”
NEW FACES IMPRESS AT FOXHALL
IPSWICH manager Ritchie Hawkins said he’d been impressed by several riders in the Tiger’s Academy Open at Foxhall, which was won by Jake Mulford ahead of Cooper Rushen and Vinnie Foord.
Hawkins said: “Jake was the favourite, he went through the card and rides this place well, I expected that from him, but he had to go out and do it.
“We know what an immense talent Cooper is, and he provided a lot of the entertainment, we know how good he will be.
“Jordy Loftus is a rider I have not seen ride before and I thought he did really well after a tough opening ride, he progressed through the meeting.
“I definitely need to mention Seth Norman on his 15th birthday; he made one of the best starts I have seen all season from gate four in his first one! I know he didn’t make it round, but he improved every race and looked a good talent and is one to watch out for next year.”
