IPSWICH remain top of the ROWE Motor Oil Premiership and with a 100 per cent record despite an early scare from local rivals King’s Lynn.
The Stars stunned a big Bank Holiday crowd at Foxhall by racing into a 24-18 lead after seven races to leave the Witches facing a deficit on their home track for the first time this season.
However, they turned the screw in the closing stages with a run of advantages, including three 5-1s in the last four heats to run out 53-37 winners.
Top two Jason Doyle (12+2) and Emil Sayfutdinov (12+1) were involved in maximums in Heats 13 and 15, whilst King’s Lynn captain Nicolai Klindt (11) reached double figures at reserve.
Ipswich boss Ritchie Hawkins said: “It was a really tough meeting for us, tougher than the scoreline suggests. We started slowly, not helped by losing the coin toss. It was one meeting where the coin toss was significant, but we weren’t good enough to start with.
“After the Heat 7 break we really turned it around and stepped up a gear or two, and I was really happy with how convincing and good the boys looked in the second half of the meeting.
“It was great to see so many people here, we appreciate it, and it is what this team deserves for a Bank Holiday occasion. It’s a local derby and you should be getting good crowds, we needed everyone’s support today and the atmosphere was great once we kicked on.”
King’s Lynn manager Rob Lyon said: “It’s a little disappointing to be six up and lose by 16, but I think the score flatters Ipswich a little bit to be quite honest.
“Fair play that they’ve got it over the line, but I think our boys are a little shell-shocked that we were well in it after Heat 9 and then we dropped off a cliff, which is a bit of a puzzle.”

BELLE Vue raced to a thrilling 46-44 home win over Sheffield on Bank Holiday Monday lunchtime – but the Tigers turned the tables with a big victory in the return fixture.
It was the Owerton outfit who took the majority of ROWE Motor Oil Premiership points from the day as they won 57-33 on home shale to also secure the aggregate point.
They were well placed in Manchester for much of the afternoon, with the Aces recovering an eight-point deficit to finally level the scores in Heat 14 before Dan Bewley and Brady Kurtz pulled off a match-winning 4-2, split by Jack Holder, in the decider.
Kurtz and Bewley recovered from slow starts in their opening rides to score 12 and 10+1 respectively, whilst Holder scored 11+1 for the Tigers and Rising Star reserve Leon Flint chipped in with 9+1.
Then in the evening in South Yorkshire the Tigers dominated throughout with six 5-1s in the first ten races to open up a 22-point advantage.
Captain Josh Pickering scored 13+1 from five rides and Holder added 11+1 in a terrific team display with reserves Lewis Kerr and Flint totalling 16+2 between them. Bewley scored 12 from six outings for the Aces.
Tigers boss Simon Stead said: “We’re the much happier team after the 30 races and I’m proud of the lads and really pleased for the supporters.
“Of course we were disappointed that we couldn’t hang on at their place, especially after we’d got off to such a strong start and got ourselves in a pretty good position.
“But I think when you look at it overall, to only lose by two points at Belle Vue was a good effort from the lads and don’t forget, we forced them into a tactical as well.
“It left us coming back to Sheffield with a lot of belief and we just carried on where we left off and just did what we have been doing at home since the season started.”

OXFORD are off the mark in the ROWE Motor Oil Premiership with a maximum haul of points against Birmingham – inspired by new signing Craig Cook.
The Spires won 49-41 at Cowley on Bank Holiday Monday lunchtime and then added a 47-43 victory at Perry Barr where Cook reeled off five straight wins for a 15-point maximum at reserve.
Their home win was underpinned by a fast start to go eight points up in the early stages, and their opening combination of Maciej Janowski and Erik Riss both scored 11+2 from five rides.
Michael Jepsen Jensen totalled 13 for the Brummies, and they looked set to gain their long-awaited first win of the season when they led the return fixture by six points after five races.
But the Spires hit back strongly with 5-1s in Heats 9 and 11, and Cook then took crucial wins in Heats 12 and 14 to see them to the win on the night – despite the Brummies’ top two of Tobiasz Musielak (11+1) and Jepsen Jensen (10+2) both hitting double digits.
Oxford boss Peter Schroeck said: “It’s finally come right. When you have to work with what you’ve got, you have to keep going until it’s right, and we had a great day today.
“It’s got us off the bottom of the ladder so to speak, it’s a bit easier on the shoulders now, and this is where our season starts now, that’s how I look at it, and there was a really good atmosphere in the team.
“We probably didn’t expect Craig to score a 15-point maximum in his first away match, but he scored 17 for us in his first one at Sheffield last year! It is very unfortunate for Francis (Gusts) but we decided we had to go down the route of more experience.”
Brummies CEO Nigel Tolley said: “Our guys like riding the outside of the track; the first half they could successfully do it, but the second half they couldn’t do that because they just hadn’t got the depth of shale on the track.
“But we can blame it on the track as much as we like – I’m very disappointed. I think the exclusion in Heat 2 with Danyon (Hume) was wrong – we’ve had a look at our video and that doesn’t show any contact, and then I don’t know what happened halfway through. “I thought we were on target, but things went from bad to worse. Craig Cook made that meeting for them tonight.”

STEELERS are top of the early WSRA National Development League table after a 45-39 win over Belle Vue at Sheffield.
It was a second ‘home’ victory for the combined Sheffield/Scunthorpe team, who only provided five race wins but limited their last places to run out victorious overall.
Nathan Ablitt topped the scoring with ten points whilst reserve Jamie Etherington racked up 8+4 from six outings.
Will Cairns (11), Freddy Hodder (10+1) and guest Cooper Rushen (11) provided the bulk of the Colts’ scoring, with the match curtailed one race early due to the Owlerton curfew.
